August 9, 2007
The long anticipated opening of Mama Bear's Cafe happened Thursday, August 9. Mama Bear's, a conscious cafe, is the latest addition
to the growing collection of businesses that make Old Town Lansing home. Cecilia Garcia, better know as Chica, is the owner and
executive chef. I had dinner at Mama Bear's opening day, and based on my experience, am looking forward to returning on a
regular basis. Chica prepares creative, healthy, and most importantly, delicious dishes, made from scratch from quality ingredients,
many of which are locally grown and produced. Not only do you get great food at a great value, but you get the satisfaction of
supporting not just one, but many local businesses and the Michigan economy.
After a healthy and delicious meal, I indulged in a rasberry cream puff, which rivaled the finest pastries I've had the pleasure to consume,
washed down with a fine cup of coffee.
Mama Bear's is located in Old Town at 1224 Turner Street (just north of Grand River Ave.), and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

June 7, 2007 - "Comics Obscura"
- I stopped in Gone Wired Cafe
for a cool drink, and noticed a publication for sale called "Comics Obscura".
It turned out to be a collection of Illustrated Short Stories, written, drawn
and published by group of Lansing artists. I bought a copy, Issue 2. The barista informed me that Issue 1 is available next door at
Everybody Reads (the finest independent bookstore in the region).
I nipped over and bought a copy right away. Everybody Reads stocks both issues, and I recommend you stop in soon to
check out this locally produced work. An issue costs only $5.00. You can support a local business and local artists in one stop,
which is environmentally efficient. Then you can walk next door to Gone Wired for coffee and a nosh.
What could be finer?
